Model United Nations

MUN is a fundamental aspect of Dubai International Academy’s ethos. Founded in 2008, the programme is an entirely student-led initiative with some teacher oversight in administrative areas. There are two central components to the MUN Programme at DIA:

1. Dubai International Academy MUN (DIAMUN): This is an 800 participants large annual MUN conference involving participants from local and international schools. DIAMUN is completely organized by DIA and its students, hosts 8 committees (simulations of different bodies: Security Council, WEF, etc…), spans 3 days of debate and resolution production. DIAMUN is one of the largest THIMUN affiliated conferences in the Middle East.

2. MUN Club in School: 150 member after-school activity where students learn essential skills like debate, legal writing, and policy research.

Cultural context

Located in Dubai, and surrounded by a politically tumultuous region, DIA through MUN promotes broader understanding of political complexity by exposing students to democratic deliberation, differing viewpoints in debate and negotiation skills. The topics of discussion at DIAMUN often involve issues specific to the Arab World, giving students greater exposure and frameworks to approach local problems.

The MUN club, through an annual UN Day Celebration and the weekly afterschool club, aims to promote the principles of the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. By learning about the involvement of the UN in solving world issues, delegates at DIAMUN develop an appreciation of the diplomatic processes and collective security on which the UN is based.

DIAMUN, through its various committees (such as Security Council, General Assemblies, Human Rights Committee, African Union, etc…) provides student participants from different countries opportunities to develop alternative viewpoints – a core skill needed for effective global citizenry. Through role-play, students take on the diplomatic positions of different countries and become accustomed to finding solutions to challenging problems.

Message from Head of DIAMUN

With great honor I, Ashish Tharoor, the Secretary General along with Dubai International Academy and the DIAMUN Executive team, would like to welcome you to the eighth annual Model United Nations at Dubai International Academy

The beauty of MUN is the exposure to global issues, leadership and diplomacy that every member of DIAMUN strives to achieve. It is our pleasure to introduce 3 phenomenal new committees this year; the Youth Assembly, wherein juniors with a keen interest in the conference may gain more experience to debate with older delegates, The Special Conference in Arabic, a committee where debate is held in Arabic, and lastly the Advisory Panel Question (APQ).

The theme for DIAMUN 2016 is Women and Development: Investing In Our Future. This year our theme focuses on two critical aspects of the world we live in today. With gender equality being one of the most popularly discussed issues in our community, women empowerment and gender equality will constitute as an integral focus of our theme. Such empowerment promotes complete economic growth across all sectors and thus creates strong economies that subsequently improve the quality of life for members of communities as a whole. Simultaneously, the theme focuses on investing in the well being of our generation today, on the basis that the youth are the future of tomorrow.

Combined, DIAMUN 2016's theme explores the effects on economic, social and political aspects of the international community. DIAMUN 2016 ensures you that each and every student involved in the conference will have a unique experience and enjoy the conference beyond expectations.

As Colin Powell once said, "Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand." With that, I wish each and every honourable chair, delegate, admin member or press member the best of luck and hope that you cherish each and every moment of the conference.

Ashish Tharoor Secretary General DIAMUN 2016
